Machu Picchu and Beyond: Trekking the "Other Inca Trail"

Machu Picchu Trip photo

August 13-22, 2009

$2499 - UI student and Campus Rec member
$2699 - Non-member

  • 10 days, 9 nights in Peru
  • 4 days guided and mule-supported trek to Machu Picchu along the stunning Salkantay Trail
  • A full day to explore the ruins at Machu Picchu
  • Optional tours to explore Cusco and the Sacred Valley of the Incas
  • Experienced local and international guides

Machu Picchu ... no archaeological site in the Americas holds as much mystery as the most famous of Inca ruins. Our trek to this legendary fortress follows the road less traveled, a different "Inca Trail" winding deep into the heart of the Peruvian Andes. Glaciated peaks, high mountain passes and deep river gorges punctuate our 4-day trek along the Salkantay Trail to Machu Picchu.

We'll start in Cusco with several days to tour this charming city and its stunning architecture as well as several local ruins and the Sacred Valley of the Incas while we acclimate to the high altitude. We then begin our 4-day mule supported trek, camping each night in luxury along the trail. Camp is set up and supplied by our hard-working guides and muleteers. We'll cross Salkantay pass at 14,760 feet before descending into lush cloud forests and river valleys teeming with orchids. A natural hot spring soak helps loosen our muscles. Our trek concludes in Aguas Calientes, from which we'll have a full day to explore Machu Picchu.
